Spotlight on the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society
For October 2025 “SC Gives Back” Jean day,, we chose to highlight the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society.
About the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society
The First Nations Child & Family Caring Society of Canada, often called the Caring Society, was created to ensure the safety and well-being of First Nations children, youth, families, and communities. It began in 1998 when child and family service leaders from First Nations communities came together to build a national organization that could provide research, policy support, education, and resources to care for children and families across Canada.
The Caring Society works through a reconciliation-based framework that aims to reduce inequities and promote culturally grounded approaches to care. It engages in public policy campaigns, educational initiatives, advocacy, and community resources that help ensure First Nations children can grow up safely at home, be healthy, access education, and feel proud of their culture and identity.
What the Caring Society does
The Caring Society advances its mission through a wide range of work that includes research, public education, and advocacy. It publishes resources, supports community-led initiatives, and provides tools for educators, organizations, and advocates who are working toward equitable outcomes for First Nations children and families.
The organization also champions legal and policy changes that address systemic disadvantages faced by First Nations children. One example is its involvement in promoting awareness of Jordan’s Principle, a legal principle that supports equitable access to government services for First Nations children by ensuring that children receive the services they need without delay due to jurisdictional disputes.
Supporting equity, culture, and child well-being
The Caring Society’s work rests on values of love, respect, integrity, and cultural affirmation. It recognizes the sacredness of children and the importance of supporting families in ways that honor Indigenous cultures, languages, and traditions. At the heart of this work is the belief that all children deserve equitable opportunities to thrive, be safe, and pursue their dreams.
Why this cause matters to us
As a family law firm, we see firsthand how access to fair and equitable support systems affects children and families in critical ways. We understand that when children face systemic barriers, the effects can ripple through families, impacting emotional health, stability, and long-term opportunities. Supporting an organization like the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society aligns with our belief that strong families are built when children are protected, their cultures are respected, and their rights are upheld.
