June is pride month in Canada!
What is the 2SLGBTQ+ community?
The term stands for 2 spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer but is evidently not restricted to individuals who identify as such, hence the addition sign at the end of the term. The community also includes intersex, pansexual, asexual, non-binary individuals as well as others.
What is Pride Month?
Pride month is a period dedicated to recognizing and honoring the history, achievements and struggles of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. It is of particular importance given the violence and discrimination suffered by the 2SLGBTQ+ community for decades. Pride Month serves as a platform to raise awareness of these injustices and promote equal rights and acceptance, as well as to encourage self-reflection. It fosters a sense of community, gives visibility to these marginalized voices, and promotes a society where everyone can live authentically without discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
How to be an ally to the 2SLGBTQ+ community?
Approximately 46% of 2SLGBTG+ individuals chose to not come out at work, keeping their identity hidden. This leads to higher stress levels, the avoidance of networking and fewer interactions which then leads to a loss of advancement opportunities. The need for the community to have allies is clear. Being an ally to the 2SLGBTQ+ community in Canada begins with truly listening and valuing the experiences of the community’s members. Do less talking and more listening! Educate yourself about diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and the unique struggles faced by 2SLGBTQ+ individuals. Silence is not an option; speak out against discrimination and prejudice whenever you witness it. Show your respect by using correct gender pronouns consistently, creating an environment where everyone feels seen and validated. Remember, being an ally is an ongoing journey of learning, empathy, and actively supporting equal rights. You will make mistakes and that’s okay; learn from your mistakes and commit to do better. Together, we can foster a more inclusive and accepting society by amplifying queer voices and advocating for their rights!
